Man held in child-chasing incident

Evanston police have made an arrest in the incident last week when a young girl said she was chased by a man as she was heading for the school bus.

Arrested and charged with disorderly conduct was Randall T. Mercer, 32, of 735 Grey Ave. in Evanston.

Police said Mercer had approached a 10-year-old King Lab student in the 1900 block of Washington Street on Oct. 11 as she was on her way to school. and ran after the child, screaming profanity.

The child ran away from the suspect and got aboard the school bus.

Investigators were able to develop information of a subject matching the description who resides in the area which led to his identification by the student.

Mercer is scheduled to apear in court on Oct. 30 at 10:30 a.m. at 6500 Old Orchard Road in Skokie.
