Are you following the fire tweets?

It may tell you more about the Fire Department than you care to know, but the city of Evanston is compiling a diary of activities today of the Fire Department that anyone can follow on Twitter.

Dubbed the “5 Alarm Tweetalong,” the exercise is intended to show the public what really goes on at the firehouse on a typical summer day in Evanston.

The Tweetalong started from Firehouse No. 1 on Emerson Street at 10:30 a.m. and will conclude at 10:30 p.m., orchestrated by city communications staffer Adelita Hernandez, who reported for work at 6:30 a.m. to make sure that all systems were in “go” condition.

During the day, Hernandez moved from firehouse to firehouse and even took In a training exercise on the lakefront by the team that would come to your rescue if you ran into trouble there.

Following the Tweetalong on Twitter was similar to listening to calls on a scanner radio, except that the Tweetalong included photos as well. Followers were treated to firemen doing pushups, preparing meals in the firehouse, and, oh yes, answering calls, most of which involved the paramedics.

Hernandez said that the Twitter account could be useful in the future for communicating news of an emergency nature to the citizenry, such as street closings caused by water line breaks.
