Rotarians do cleanup act on Golf

Members of the Rotary Club of Evanston Lighthouse donned their government-issued safety vests this weekend to engage in their periodic pickup of trash by the side of Golf Road between McCormick Boulevard and Crawford Avenue.

A community-service project of the club, volunteers gather in the T.J. Maxx parking lot on Golf Road four times a year and walk in teams along both sides of the road to retrieve several pounds of cigarette butts, empty water bottles, discarded auto parts, paper cups, and an occasional cell phone or credit card.

They do have their limits, however, and will reject formerly live animals such as squirrels and raccoons.

Once collected in big orange trash bags, they leave their pickings by the side of the road for pickup later by county road crews.
