Cops bust two in theft of car wheels

Two Chicago men are facing felony theft charges after they allegedly stole the wheels and other items from a car parked in the 800 block of Hinman Avenue early this morning.

Evanston police say officers responded about 2:45 a.m. to a call from a witness, who described someone seen taking the wheels off a Honda parked on the block, The officers stopped Ricardo Gaytan, 21, of 1804 W. Huron St. in Chicago, near the scene because he matched the description provided by the witness.

They also stopped a vehicle driving away from the area, driven by Angel Castrejon, 21 of 1911 W. Superior St. in Chicago. Cmdr. Jay Parrott says police found items taken from the Honda inside Castrejon's car along with tools used to commit the theft.

The two are scheduled to appear in Skokie district court at 9 a.m. on Nov. 7.

Thank you!

I'm the owner of the car in this story. I had a chance to meet and thank the man who called the police and kept us from having to replace the four wheels on our Honda.

I find it amazing that this guy stopped, at 2:45 AM after a long shift at work, saw what was going on, called the police and followed up with them. The response time was remarkable, as was the fact that they caught the tire-stealer based on the witness' description. They also got the driver of the van, which contained four more wheels and tires from another vehicle. None of this would have happened if Mr Guy hadn't done what he did.

Irritating and infuriating as it was to see our car up on bricks and wheel-less, lug nuts scattered on the ground, at 3 AM, it could have been much worse than having to put the tires back on the car. We have a high insurance deductible and it would have been very difficult for us to come up with the cash to replace all four wheels and tires. It would have meant a day of work (and pay) lost while we scrambled for the cash, had the car towed, and got it put back together.

I'm so pleased that, though pure coincidence, I was able to meet the person who helped us. He's a great guy whose mom, girlfriend, friends, dog, co-workers...and everyone else, should be proud of.

THANK YOU!
