Sandy expected to drive high winds, lakeshore flooding

The National Weather Service has issued a lakeshore flood warning for Evanston and the rest of the Chicago area from 1 a.m. Tuesday until 4 p.m. Wednesday as the turbulence created by Hurricane Sandy heads our way.

Several hundred flights to and from the east coast have been cancelled at Chicago's two major airports.

Northerly winds of 30 to 35 miles per hour with gusts of 50 to 60 miles per hour and wave heights of 18 to 23 feet were forecast along the shoreline.

These large waves will batter the beaches and shorelines, resulting in potential coastal erosion and flooding. Residents living along the lakefront should be alert for rising water and take appropriate action.
