It's hot and happening at Evanston's Custer Fair

Thousands of people turned out in Evanston on this hot and humid Saturday for the opening of the Custer's Last Stand street fair.

Lemonade, ice cream and water bottles were the order of the day as visitors perused booths offering everything from odd figurines to an array of summer clothing.

If little ones got bored, there were street performers who could be found talking to a mop or trying out other bits from a repretoire that might also have drawn applause and laughter from fair-goers in centuries past.

Musicians performed on two separate stages.

And, new this year, automaker Nissan was offering test drives of some of its newest vehicles.

Just down the street, you could dine at Evanston's own Hummingbird Kitchen food truck.

Or spin the wheel for free samples from Whole Foods market.

The fair, with its main entrance at Chicago Avenue and Main Street, runs until 9 p.m. tonight and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
