Car fire forces medical building evacuation

Bill SmithFriday, Aug. 15, 2008, at 6:24 pm

Evanston fire fighters ordered a medical building at 1000 Central St. evacuated this afternoon after a car caught fire in the the building's parking garage.

The fire, on the second level of the garage, was reported about 2:50 p.m. in the building across from Evanston Hospital.

It destroyed a 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo owned by a person who was in the building for a doctor's appointment, but no injuries were reported and the damage was limited to the car.

In addition to medical offices the building also houses a day care center. The cause of the fire is under investigation

I was there at 12:30pm and I saw the wrecked car... the reported time must be wrong. This must have happened around 10am, as not only was the car not on fire when I saw it (I thought it looked like vandalism at the time), but the hospital had no signs of evacuation, and there were no fire crews on the scene. When I went back to my car around 1:50pm, the vehicle in question had been removed. Nothing left but burnt rubber from the tires and glass on the ground.
