What to say when the victims walk in?

Bill SmithWednesday, Jun. 25, 2008, at 11:15 am

It's got to be every burglar's nightmare. The residents of the place walk in while you're trying to walk off with their stuff.

What do you say? Well a burglar at 733 Mulford St. in Evanston had an answer when residents walked into the dining room of the home while he was there about 1:30 Tuesday afternoon.

He told them the house was on fire and they needed to get out right away.

Police say he tried to rush them out, and fled himself, along with two other suspects, in a silver SUV.

The victims described the trio as heavy-set Hispanic men between 5-foot-10 and 6-feet tall, wearing jeans.

The victims said they discovered the thieves had made off with some cash, but nothing else appeared to be missing.
