Highway Robbery at the Gas Pump

John ThomsonMonday, Jul. 14, 2008, at 11:05 am

It was first reported in a news segment that if you use your credit or debit card to pay at the pump you would be charged a higher fee than what was posted.  The chicanery was that you would not be told before hand.  I tested this out at the Valero Gas Station on Asbury and Oakton.  Sure enough, the price at the pump was $4.32 a gallon but when I used by debit card to pay for the transaction the price quickly jumped to $4.42 a gallon, a full 10 cents (.10) more than listed.  This is being perpetrated at the ignorance of the public.  Even after I saw the one time segment I haven't seen it repeated or reported in any news medium.  The solution to being taxed or ripped off is to not use any kind of cards at the pump but cash only.

i belatedly read the original post about prices changing at gas pumps if you choose to use credit rather than paying cash. recently i have noticed that several of the local gas stations are posting different prices for regular, cash v. credit. these are on the signs that you see while driving by. it is not as nefarious as the initial poster's comments about "highway robbery." however - while the posting of the information probably meets any reasonable standard for disclosure, i have to admit that i had to look at the information closely while driving by to pick out the difference. the valero on oakton has one price on their noticeable big sign - the word "CASH" is under the price, and in smaller letters that are easy to miss..
