Chamber urges transit action

Jonathan PermanWednesday, Jun. 27, 2007, at 10:53 am

Two weeks ago, a strong bi-partisan majority of the Illinois House Mass Transit Committee approved a $452-million revenue proposal for transit operations.  The Evanston Chamber believes it is the most viable option to help save mass transit from massive fare increases and service cuts.  It includes the package of reforms to improve coordination and efficiency in the transit system.

Some have suggested a one-time bailout for the CTA in this year’s budget.  A temporary funding increase would not address the long-term needs of the system and will force the transit agencies into another crisis next year.

All three agencies, CTA, Metra, and Pace, are facing serious financial challenges.  All have outlined the service cuts and fare increases for 2007 and 2008 that would be necessary without action from Springfield.

Mass transit is a key component on what makes Evanston an attractive place to work and to live.  Our employers and residents depend on a rail and bus system that is reliable, convenient, and affordable.

We need your help to convince the Governor and the General Assembly that mass transit needs a comprehensive, regional solution, not a bailout.  Click here to send the state legislative leaders and the Governor a strong message to support mass transit.
