Grants offered to help groups grow

The Evanston Community Foundation is accepting applications for its root2fruit grants to small non-profit organizations.

The foundation will make up to three new grants of up to $10,000 each for the 2011 calendar year. Each grant award is renewable for two additional years for a maximum award of $30,000.

Kids' health series at the Evanston Public Library

This fall, the Evanston Public Library presents a series of programs related to mental and physical well-being for children and teens. All programs take place in the Main Library Community Meeting Room, 1703 Orrington Avenue in Evanston.

Disabilities group to honor head of Evanston service

Jane Doyle, the executive director and co-founder of Center for Independent Futures in Evanston, will be honored at a fundraiser for a non-profit consumer review website that serves the disabled.

Doyle created Center for Independent Futures in 2002 to help address the severe lack of community-based support services for individuals with disabilities. The Center focuses on transitioning young adults with disabilities into community life and serves over 200 individuals with disabilities and their families.

Sewer district may be ordered to clean up channel

A state panel may soon order steps to clean up water in the North Shore Channel that flows through Evanston.

Mosquito spraying in south Evanston Wednesday

The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District plans to spray in south Evanston between 8 p.m. Wednesday and 2 a.m. Thursday, weather permitting.

Women walk 208 million steps for health

The Evanston Health Department says the 1,100 participants in its Women Out Walking  program racked up about 208 million steps this year.

That's more than double the participation level in the first year of the community health initiative last year.

Heat watch issued by city

The Evanston Health Department has issued an extreme heat watch for today. Temperature in the 90’s with heat index values at or above 100 degrees today and tomorrow. Nighttime temperatures in the mid 70’s with minimum heat index in the upper 70’s provide little relief for our residents.

City considers shuttle for farmers’ markets

Residents of Evanston’s West Side would be able to take a free shuttle to the big Saturday downtown farmers’ market next year under a plan proposed by the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Dept., according to its director, Doug Gaynor.
