Big promises for housing grant impact

Dick Durbin and U.S. Rep Jan Schakowsky this morning, taking them on a tour of the west side neighborhood that's targeted for rehab work under a $18 million grant the city recently received from the federal government.
After touring the home of a local resident who says she can't sell the two-family house she and two siblings inherited from their parents because of how the foreclosure crisis has decimated property values on the block, the politicians talked to reporters about what they hope the program will accomplish.
School sued over student's death

Pizza carjackers sentenced

The Cook County State's Attorney's office says the two Chicago men, Christopher Y. Norton, 21, of the 1400 block of Pratt, and Carletus Jackson, 22, of the 1300 block of Monticello, pled guilty to one count of vehicular invasion before Judge Larry Axelrod in Skokie district court.
Pizza delivery man robbed
Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at 5:11 pm by Bill SmithEvanston police say a delivery driver for a pizza shop was robbed Tuesday night in the 100 block of Callan Avenue.
The driver told police he found no doorbell when he arrived at the building to make a delivery, so he called the customer. Then two men approached from a gangway beside the building and one showed a gun. They fled after taking the delivery man's wallet and cell phone.
Takes bike, gets hammered

He picked up the bike and started to ride away on it when he was confronted by a woman who demanded he give it back to her.
Should St. Francis charge for parking?
Thursday, November 19, 2009, at 8:54 am by Bill SmithMembers of Evanston's Parking Committee learned Wednesday night that the city rakes in about $500,000 a year from taxes it collects on parking fees charged at Evanston Hospital.
That led Alderman Colleen Burrus, 9th Ward, to suggest that city officials should talk to executives at St. Francis Hospital about ending its free parking policy so the city could collect the tax on fees people would pay to park there.
Voting precincts reduced
Thursday, September 24, 2009, at 1:42 pm by Bill SmithEvanston will have six fewer voting precincts for February's statewide primary than it did for the city elections this year.
Cook County Clerk David Orr says he's trimming the total number of precincts in suburban Cook County by 15 percent to save about $750,000 a year.
The reduction here amounts to 9 percent of what had been 70 precincts in town. In some cases voters will still be using the same polling place, but the polling place will serve fewer precincts.

Student frightened by comments
Wednesday, September 16, 2009, at 4:37 pm by Bill SmithIn the wake of two incidents in the past week in which a man tried to lure school girls into his van, Evanston police today reported another somewhat similar incident.
Police Commander Tom Guenther says that on Monday afternoon a 10-year-old girl heading home from Oakton School was walking in the 200 block of Asbury Avenue when she was approach about 3:50 p.m. by two Hispanic males driving an older model, two-tone gray and brown pickup truck.
The student said the pickup truck slowed down and the passenger started talking to her, saying "Hey, pretty girl," which he repeated several times.
