How do I add a photo?

Here's how to include a photo in content you post to the site.

1. Do not post a photo unless you have the legal right to publish it. If it's not a photo you took yourself, ask permission of the copyright holder. See our terms of service document for more about your obligations.
2. If you can, resize your photo so it will fit the page on this site. Edit your photo in your favorite photo editing program so that it is no more than 480 pixels in either dimension. (If you use Adobe Photoshop Elements, save a copy of your photo choosing "Save for Web" and use the setting JPEG High. Then upload the copy, which generally will take much less time to display than your original photo would have.)
3. If you can't resize the photo, our software will resize it for you when you upload it, but that may make the photo look a little fuzzy, compared to how it would look if you resized it yourself.
4. If your photo will be less than the full 480 pixel column width and you want text to wrap around it, edit the image so it has a 10 pixel white border on the side that with adjoin the text.
5. Use the "Share news" menu to select the type of post you want to use to hold your photo.
6. On the "Submit" or edit page for that post, place your insert cursor at the point in the story where you want the photo to appear. (If the photo will be the full width of the text column, open up a new line in the text for the photo.)
7. Begin to upload your photo by clicking the icon at the top of the Body field that shows an image of a tree.
   
8. In the new popup window that opens, click the file browser icon at the right edge of the field labeled Image URL.

9. That opens a second popup window. In that window, click the Browse button and find the photo you want on your computer. Then click the Upload File button to transfer it to our server.
   
   
10. Once the transfer is complete, your photo will appear in the popup window. Click on the image. That will return you to the first popup window, where the path to your photo on our server will now appear in the Image URL field. Type in a description and title for the image.
11. If your photo is less than the full width of the column, select the Appearance tab and select Left or Right from the Alignment dropdown field.
12. Click the Insert button at the bottom of the window. You'll see the photo appear in the Body field of the story editing form.
13. Add a caption for your photo if you like. (You may want to use the "I" button at the top of the Body field to have the caption appear in italic type.)
14. Use the Preview button to check how your page looks with the photo added.
15. Then use the Submit button to post your new content item with the photo.
