Halloween Candy in these economic times...

Hi all,

I'm a graduate journalism student at Northwestern and was curious to see if the current economic climate is causing anyone to change their Halloween spending habits.

More specifically, do you buy different kinds of candy? less candy? spend less on costumes?

I'd appreciate any feedback you can offer!

We have cut way back this year--we used to drop a bundle at the temporary Halloween store at Dempster and Dodge, but my husband has been out of work for several months so the kids have to find their costumes in what we already own instead of buying ready made store bought ones, and we are doing fewer pumpkins and cheaper kinds of candy.

We'll probably get the same amount of candy--big bags from Costco--that we've done before. We get a LOT of kids.

We might also buy and carve a jack-o-lantern.

But no cutbacks otherwise, since we don't decorate or dress in costume or anything else for Halloween anyway.

I noticed that the hobby store on Davis has a class or something for kids to make their own masks -- this weekend, I think. Parents might be cutting back a little that way.
