Evanston hosts softball tournament

Over 500 girls on 37 softball teams from across northern Illinois will be in Evanston along with their coaches and families for the fourth annual Memorial Day weekend travel softball tournament hosted by Evanston Baseball and Softball Association.

The tournament runs from May 25 to 27 on fields at James Park, Robert Crown Park, and Evanston Township High School.

The championship games on Sunday will be played at James Park.

Dan Managlia, the tournament director, says the turnout is the larges ever for the event, which kicks off the girls softball tournament season for most of the teams.

Each team competes in one of three travel softball age divisions: 10U, 12U, and 14U.  The Evanston Express has three teams entered in the tournament -- one 10U team and two teams in the 12U division.

“We are pleased to be able to host a tournament of this size and the City is a great partner in making it successful,” said David Campbell, EBSA President.

“This tournament is one of the largest held in Evanston and, with 500 families coming to support their teams, it has the potential not only to highlight the popularity of girls fastpitch softball, but also contribute to the Evanston economy.”

EBSA has been operating in Evanston for over 60 years. It's the largest non-profit youth sports organization in town and is run entirely by volunteers. Each year EBSA serves over 1,400 boys and girls ages 5-14 in youth baseball and softball programs.
