Celebrate National Night Out

City of EvanstonMonday, Jul. 21, 2008, at 3:33 pm

The Evanston Police Department invites community groups and volunteers to join in the National Night Out Celebration from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 5, to "Give Neighborhood Crime and Drugs a Going Away Party."

To participate, residents and community members are asked to turn front porch lights on as a display of unity and plan gatherings, such as block parties, cookouts, ice cream socials, parades, or flashlight walks.

Participating groups and community members can register their gatherings for free with Evanston Police Community Strategies, (847) 866-5019, by leaving a contact name and a description of the group plans for the event. Groups can also email their information to Kdemski@cityofevanston.org.

National Night Out is a unique crime prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). The event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anti crime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know the neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

National Night Out is this upcoming Tuesday, August 5. Brummel Park Neighbors will be changing the format of our usual National Night Out event to celebrate our collaboration with our Chicago neighbors. We will open the evening at 6pm with a joint walk along Howard St starting at Custer/Damen, walking to the Metra tracks, and then going to Ridge and back to Damen/Custer (if you want to make up a sign, please feel free). After the walk, neighbors will bring their dinners to Brummel Park for a picnic, and at 7:30pm we will have a Neighborhood Watch meeting including Watch elections. Join us and find out how getting involved improves the quality of life in our neighborhood!
