Meeting might lead to new viaducts
Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl says she hopes residents will pack the room when the Chicago Transit Authority holds a community outreach meeting about the Purple Line at the Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center, 1655 Foster St., from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3.
The mayor says the meeting should serve as the first step that should lead to fixing the CTA's viaducts in Evanston.
"Numbers count," the mayor says, "Our chances of having new viaducts will improve if we pack Fleetwood."

How Bright are Street Lights ? Obviously not very.
Friday evening [11/25/09] I saw the street lights were out from Simpson/Ridge to Greenbay and the canal including Colfax [north of the canal was o.k.]. I called the police to notify them. Twelve out of thirteen times I've call about similar sized outages [one from Foster/Sheridan to Lincoln/Ridge] the police said I was the first to call---sometimes 2-3 hours after sunset.
I've stopped residents out walking and mentioned the lights were out [and several times policemen and saw police driving through the area but when I called later found they had not reported it] and they had not noticed---including once I found out this was the second night they were out.
Three possibilities are:
1. Lights are so dim people don't know they have lights on the streets.
2. They have house alarms and cars in garages so they are not worried about theft or accidents.
3. They figure someone else will take care of it---neighbors, police, city crews. I.e. "not my job"
Does not bode well for getting citizens involved in the budget or cost savings. Unless--if lights are not important, we could save alot of money removing them and depend on porch lights.
OK, call me ignorant, but I
OK, call me ignorant, but I fail to see why fixing unsafe viaducts should result from an outreach meeting... I understand the need to address other purple line issues, but where does the responsibility lie for the structures that are already in place?
Um, what about Metra?
Some of the Metra viaducts are in worse shape than the purple, much less the unnecessary 'third' viaduct for a track that no longer exists...what about those?
