"EVANSTON:" Geographical Place, Concept, Illusion, State of Mind......?
Imagine this: You're at an extended family function, school reunion or encounter an old acquaintence on the street....people who've lived in the Chicago area all of their lives and knew you well at one time-but you've lost track of one another.
After you exchange the last__ ( no. of years ) worth of information, the conversation focuses on the concept of your respective communities. The other party says to you, "Evanston,... how do you like it?......... kind of liberal ( "pretty progressive!, yes? ", "interesting community?", "lot of development going on there, huh ?" " Is Dave's Italian Kitchen still there? " " Still like the North Shore, don't you ? "You shop at Old Orchard ? " etc...whatever.)
Let's take an informal survey of the "tagline" ascribed to Evanston nowadays from the outside, in these kinds of conversations.. ( Outside could be someone who doesn't know what the Tower is, doesn't live here, but has lived in the Chicago area for sometime, etc )
How do their perceptions compare to ours ?
There is segregation in Evanston, but I'd say it's more along socioeconomic lines. To be perfectly frank, the corridors along Dodge, Howard and other areas that get most of the ink in the police blotter are *not* all African American, and there are many, many ethnicities of all colors who are well-represented in the wealthier parts of town.
I see us as a microcosm of the rest of America, with the same inequalities that affect those who have less, and welcoming to those who are kind and work hard.
My husband and I are considering buying a home Evanston to raise our family, however after reading the crime stats, and some blog comments about racism (esp. toward African Americans), we aren't so sure this is a good fit. Can some Evanston residents chime in? What is the real story about Evanston -- is there really harmony in the community? Is it safe?
Evanston is a great place to live, but much like the City of Chicago - segregated for the most part. When I lived in Evanston, I enjoyed it very much and I don't recall feeling unsafe. In regards to family - I recommend hanging out by the high school when school lets out. You will know if it's right for you very quickly.
